Click flooring is honest about what lies beneath: every hump telegraphs, every hollow becomes a creak. Preparation means the old covering assessed or lifted, high spots taken down, low spots filled, boards screwed down where they move, and the surface left genuinely flat before a single plank clicks.
Underlay then does its quiet jobs: smoothing minor imperfection, softening footfall, and providing the moisture barrier ground floors and any concrete demand. Skipping the barrier over concrete is how new floors cup within a season.

Acclimatisation and expansion: boards need room
Boards arrive at warehouse temperature and humidity, and they change size settling into a heated home, which is why packs rest in the room before fitting. Fitted straight off the van, a floor does its settling after installation, and the results are gaps or peaks depending on the season.
Expansion gaps at every edge are the floor's breathing room: hidden under skirting or beading, they let the whole surface move as one through the year. The floor that buckled in a heatwave almost always died of a missing gap, usually where it was pinned tight under a doorframe.

Doorways, thresholds and the finishing trims
